Anyone who wants to learn to read an INCI list usually has a concrete goal: classify products better, avoid irritants, and not trust labels blindly. This is particularly useful for Aleppo soap. True Aleppo soap is traditionally made from very few raw materials — at the same time many „Aleppo“-like soaps are circulating on the market that may look similar but have very different ingredients.

In this article I will show you step by step how to read an INCI list (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) for Aleppo soap. You will learn which terms denote the typical soap salts from olive oil and laurel oil, why water and lye are not necessarily „present“ in the finished bar, and which additives can be warning signs. The goal is not to memorize every chemical detail, but to be able in everyday situations, within 30 seconds, to recognise whether the formulation fits genuine Aleppo soap.

What is an INCI list — and why doesn’t it simply say “olive oil and laurel oil”?

The INCI list is a standardized ingredients list for cosmetics. It is meant to be understood worldwide, so raw materials are named according to fixed terms. A manufacturer therefore cannot write whatever sounds good but must use the cosmetically correct ingredient names.

For soap this is confusing for many: through saponification (soap formation) oil and lye do not result in „oil plus lye“ but in chemically new substances — the soap salts. For that reason the INCI list often does not show the oils themselves but the soap salts, for example Sodium Olivate. That is the sodium salt of the fatty acids from olive oil — simplified: the finished cleansing agent „olive oil soap“.

Important: There are different ways to declare soap. Some lists list the oils (e.g. Olea Europaea Fruit Oil) and additionally Sodium Hydroxide (caustic soda, i.e. the lye). Others primarily declare the soap salts (Sodium Olivate, Sodium Laurelate) and supplement with water/glycerin. Both can be correct — what matters is the overall logic of the list.

The basic rule for genuine Aleppo soap: few, clear ingredients

Aleppo soap is traditionally an olive-oil soap with laurel oil. That means: the main proportion is based on olive oil, with laurel oil added (more precisely: oil from the fruits of the laurel tree, not necessarily from the leaves). The formulation is generally minimalist. The shorter the INCI list, the easier it is to assess its plausibility.

Typical components you can expect:

  • Soap salt from olive oil (commonly Sodium Olivate)
  • Soap salt from laurel oil (commonly Sodium Laurelate or related terms)
  • Water (Aqua) — depending on declaration style
  • Glycerin (Glycerin) — formed during saponification and typically remains in traditional soap

Anything beyond that is not automatically „bad.“ But the more additives appear (fragrances, colorants, complex surfactants, preservatives), the less it corresponds to what many understand by Aleppo soap — and the more important your assessment becomes.

If you want to keep only a few INCI terms, keep these. They help you quickly identify genuine Aleppo soap by its ingredients.

Sodium Olivate: the core of an olive-oil soap

Sodium Olivate is almost always a central element in Aleppo soap. It denotes the soap salt formed from olive oil and sodium hydroxide. In a classic Aleppo soap, olive oil is the main raw material — accordingly, Sodium Olivate should appear near the top of the list.

If you find primarily other soap salts instead of Sodium Olivate (e.g. Sodium Palmate from palm oil or Sodium Cocoate from coconut oil), then it is still a soap, but no longer the typical Aleppo formulation. That is not necessarily wrong; however, the name „Aleppo“ would then at least require explanation.

Sodium Laurelate / Sodium Laurate: an indication of laurel oil — but with pitfalls

For laurel oil, INCI lists often show terms like Sodium Laurelate or Sodium Laurate. Both are soap salts that can result from fats/oils containing lauric acid. And this is exactly the pitfall: Lauric acid is not only present in laurel oil but also in other raw materials, especially in coconut oil (Cocos Nucifera Oil). A soap can therefore contain Sodium Laurate without laurel oil being involved.

Therefore: these terms are an indication, but not standalone proof. The signal is strongest when Laurus Nobilis Fruit Oil (laurel fruit oil) appears explicitly, or when a clearly matching combination of soap salts and oils is present.

Laurus Nobilis Fruit Oil: the cleaREST indication of laurel

When Laurus Nobilis Fruit Oil appears in the INCI list, the situation is much clearer: that is laurel fruit oil. Some products declare it as an oil (before saponification) or as a fraction that may remain partially unsaponified (depending on the manufacturing process and superfatting — i.e., the deliberately not fully saponified oil fraction that can make the skin feel milder).

Be careful with „Laurus Nobilis Leaf Oil“: that is laurel leaf oil (an essential oil). It is strongly scented and is not what traditionally constitutes the laurel oil portion in Aleppo soap. It can be present in addition, but a leaf oil does not replace a fruit oil.

Aqua, Sodium Hydroxide, Glycerin: why these listings can be normal

Aqua (water) and Sodium Hydroxide (sodium hydroxide) may look alarming at first, but in soap they are often simply part of the manufacturing. Water is needed to prepare the lye. Sodium Hydroxide is the base that reacts with the fatty acids. In a well-saponified, properly cured soap the lye is not „free“ but chemically bound — nevertheless it can appear on the declaration because it was used as a starting material.

Glycerin is produced naturally during saponification. Industrially manufactured soap bars may partially remove glycerin and add it back later; traditional soaps usually retain it. Therefore, if glycerin appears on the INCI list, it is not a red flag but rather to be expected.

Order in the INCI list: what it really tells you — and what it doesn’t

INCI ingredients are generally listed in descending order by weight — at least for quantities above a certain threshold. That helps with interpretation, but it has limitations for soap.

Why? A soap bar loses water during curing. The proportion of “Aqua” in the finished soap therefore depends heavily on when and how it was measured. In addition, the declaration logic (oils vs. soap salts) can visually alter the order.

Practically speaking: pay less attention to whether Aqua is listed in position 1 or 3, and more to whether the list as a whole is plausible. For an Aleppo soap, an olive-based composition should clearly dominate, and laurel should be recognizable as the secondary ingredient — without the list drifting toward “shower gel in bar form.”

What can be conspicuous for “Aleppo” on the INCI list: additives and typical warning signs

Many buyers choose Aleppo soap because they want a reduced, transparent formulation. Precisely for that reason it is useful to know typical additives — not to condemn them outright, but to understand what they may mean in daily use.

Parfum and fragrance allergens: relevant if you are sensitive

If Parfum appears on the INCI list, a fragrance mixture has been added. In addition, declarable fragrance allergens may appear, for example Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Geraniol or Eugenol. These substances are not “automatically dangerous,” but they are common triggers of irritation or contact allergies in sensitive skin.

Genuine, well-cured Aleppo soap often has a subtle, distinctive scent arising from the raw materials and the curing process — not a perfume profile. If you intentionally want to stay minimalist, a perfumed “Aleppo soap” at least requires explanation.

Colorants and visual embellishment

Colorants can be recognised by CI numbers (e.g. CI 19140) or by a declared color (depending on region and product). A strong, uniform colour is rather atypical for Aleppo soap. The classic appearance develops through curing, surface oxidation and the greenish core inside.

A colourfully “perfect” bar can still be technically sound — but if the colouring appears very deliberate, it is likely a modernly formulated natural soap in the Aleppo style rather than traditionally produced Aleppo soap.

EDTA, chelators and „Kalk-Management”

In some soap bars you will find Tetrasodium EDTA or similar chelating agents. They bind metal ions (e.g. calcium from hard water) to reduce soap scum and deposits. That is functionally understandable — but not typical for traditional Aleppo soap.

If you live in a region with very hard water and soap residues are a problem, a chelator can make the application more pleasant. For “genuine Aleppo soap” in the traditional sense, however, it is an indication of a modernized formulation.

Sulfates and additional surfactants: distinction from Syndets

Terms like Sodium Laureth Sulfate or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate denote synthetic surfactants, as found in shampoos and shower gels. A product may be marketed as “soap” and still contain such surfactants — technically it is then more of a syndet (synthetic detergent), i.e. a washing bar that is not primarily composed of saponified oils.

This matters for expectations: syndets can be formulated closer to skin pH, often feel “smoother”, and behave differently in hard water. If you are specifically looking for Aleppo soap, such surfactants should generally not appear on the INCI list.

Aleppo soap ingredients: typical INCI examples (without a rigid template)

There is no single “correct” INCI list because manufacturers declare differently. Still, typical patterns can be identified.

Typical minimal pattern based on soap salts

  • Sodium Olivate
  • Sodium Laurelate (or Sodium Laurate)
  • Aqua
  • Glycerin

Depending on the manufacturer, the order may vary. Sometimes Aqua or Glycerin are missing from the list, sometimes they are included.

Typical pattern based on oils and lye

  • Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil
  • Laurus Nobilis Fruit Oil
  • Aqua

Here too Glycerin may be listed additionally. What matters is plausibility: olive oil as the base, laurel as the second main ingredient, and not a long list of fragrances and additives if you are looking for the “traditional”.

Understanding laurel oil content: why percentage claims and INCI are not the same

Many products advertise “10%”, “20%” or “40% laurel oil”. That sounds clear, but in practice is difficult to verify — especially based solely on the INCI list.

INCI ingredients are not listed with percentages (except in rare cases), and the order only gives a rough indication of relative amounts. Furthermore: in soap the raw material quantities before saponification are not identical to what remains as soap salts in the bar after saponification. Laurel oil can also be present as an unsaponified fraction (superfat), without you being able to read that directly.

What you can still do:

  • If laurel appears only as “Leaf Oil” (essential oil), that is not evidence of a high laurel oil content.
  • If the olive component dominates and laurel is clearly identifiable as the second main ingredient, that matches the typical Aleppo logic.
  • Very long lists with many oils, extracts and fragrances make any sensible percentage estimation difficult and rather indicate an “inspired” product than classic Aleppo soap.

Why genuine Aleppo soap often appears “blander” — and why that can be a good sign

On the shelf some bars of soap appear perfect: uniform colour, strong scent, creamy lather at first contact. Genuine Aleppo soap is often more RESTrained. The scent can become noticeably milder with ageing, and the lather is not necessarily abundant, because olive-oil soaps tend to form a fine, dense lather.

This has practical consequences: someone switching from heavily perfumed soap bars or shower gel sometimes interprets the RESTraint as “doesn’t work”. In truth the washing principle is the same (surfactants dissolve fat/dirt), only the accompanying substances are different — and therefore the skin feel is different as well.

  1. How long is the list? A very short list tends to indicate a traditional formulation.
  2. Is olive oil/olive soap clearly identifiable? Sodium Olivate or Olea Europaea Fruit Oil should be central.
  3. Is laurel named appropriately? Most clearly Laurus Nobilis Fruit Oil. Sodium Laurelate/Sodium Laurate are indicators, but not conclusive on their own.
  4. Is there perfume or allergens? If you are sensitive or want to keep things minimal, this is an important signal.
  5. Are there synthetic surfactants? Sulfates or similar surfactants indicate a syndet character.

When you shop online: mentally insist on the INCI list. If it is completely missing or only a marketing description is present („with valuable oils“), comparability is low.

Common misunderstandings: „without chemicals“, „without lye“, „alkaline for the skin“

Around natural soap there are formulations that cause more confusion than they help. Three brief clarifications make reading INCI and product texts easier.

„Without chemicals“ does not exist — but without unnecessary additives it can

Everything you put on the skin can be described chemically — including olive oil and laurel oil. A more useful question is: How complex is the formulation, and do I need these additives? That is exactly what the INCI list is for.

„Without lye“ is technically problematic for real soap

Soap is produced by saponification with a lye. „Without lye“ can at best mean: in the finished product there is no free, unreacted lye left. That is the goal with properly made soap. Sodium Hydroxide may still appear on the INCI list because it was used as a starting material.

„Alkaline“: why that can be relevant for skin feel, but proves nothing

Soap is generally alkaline. That can cause a sensation of tightness for some people, especially with very dry or already irritated skin. However, it is not a quality criterion in the sense of “good” or “bad”. What matters are the application (dosage, water temperature, thorough rinsing) and the subsequent routine.
